Postgraduate research
Whether you are looking to join a group of specialist machine learning researchers or have an application area of interest and want to work with our AI researchers and affiliates, there are opportunities at The University of Manchester.
PhD study
Prospective PhD candidates have a number of possible routes to consider. To support you with the application process, we have brought all this together in one place.
The first step is to identify suitable academic supervisor who works in your field of interest. Our research explorer portal lists all our researchers and their research specialisms.
Once you have made contact with a potential supervisor, you will need to formally apply to the appropriate PhD programme. The supervisor can advise you on which programme to apply to.
A full list of PhD programmes and details on how to apply can be found at the University’s postgraduate research pages.
Centres for Doctoral Training
In 2023, The University of Manchester secured a brand new UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in Decision Making for Complex Systems, led by Mauricio A Alvarez. You can find out more about that programme here, including opportunities to study your PhD fully funded as part of our CDT cohort.
